Last Friday, Feb 5th, students from 3 Baltimore City high schools competed in the 18th Annual Baltimore Brain Bee event held at Baltimore City College High School.
Participants were from the following schools; Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Friendship Academy of Engineering & Technology, and Mount Saint Joseph High School.
The participants had to answer written, oral, and lab practical questions about neuroscience at the Bee.
The first place Baltimore Brain Bee Champion was Mr. Steve Tanekeu of the Friendship Academy of Engineering and Technology. Steve won a $75 cash prize and the chance to represent Baltimore City at the US National Brain Bee competition to be held at the University of Maryland this coming March 18-20th.
The US Brain Bee winner proceeds to the International Brain Bee; http://www.dental.umaryland.edu/brainbee/
In addition, Steve and an adult chaperone both received full Conference Scholarships to attend the 2016 Brain Injury Association of Maryland’s (BIAMD) Brain Injury; Navigating the Journey conference to be held on March 24-45th. We thank BIAMD for the opportunity for Steve and his teacher, Ms. Criselda Belarmino, to attend the BIAMD annual conference. http://biamd.org/index.php/about-us/our-organization.html
Mr. Ismail Bhadmus, also of Friendship Academy of Engineering and Technology, came in second place, winning a cash prize of $50.
Third place was awarded to Mr. Luke Alli, of Mount Saint Joseph High School, with a cash prize of $25.
All of our participants did a fabulous job, and we hope they enjoyed the experience. We expect to see them back next year for Steve to defend his title, and hope more schools will participate.
Our special thanks go out to the teachers and parents who attended the event this year, and to those whose contributions made it possible. We are very grateful to Ms. Cindy Harcum, Principal of Baltimore City College High School, and Science Head Michael Cameron for allowing us to hold the competition at City College High School.
